Some of my personal investment habits. Totally Arbitrary. Maybe Stupid.

Been investing myself for a little over three years. Have been posting replies in investing for a while and figure it may be time for me to share some of my own investment habits. Again, not scientific, not pro, totally arbitrary, maybe full of stupidity, as I am NOT a financial/econ/investment/business professional.
-I believe investment starts with budgeting. I made a monthly budget and calculated how much money I have left after usual expenditure and putting away emergency savings. Then I invest 60%-70% of my remaining money; the rest I put into high-yield savings account or let it sit for several months and open a CD somdwhere.
-I just have a.....paranoid obsession with diversification. After three years of playing with the market I now own a portfolio of more than 15 stocks, a couple REITS, 15+ ETFs (including one gold ETF) and four mutual funds. Many of these I have only say 0.5-1K of money invested in. I am just convinced that going into diversification helps disperse and mitigate risk. My gold ETF has made up for some of the losses in the current market downturn, but with everything turned to shit I am not better off than anybody else. I also use ETFs to gain exposure to foreign markets I cannot directly buy into. The same obsession applies to bank accounts: I have accounts in several banks to spread my savings.
-When I first started buying stocks, I used to find the portfolio of a specific ETF in a specific sector that I have a positive view on, find their top 5-10 holdings of stocks, check their dividend info, and buy the one with highest dividend yield. Kinda like letting the "smarter" people do the picking for me while not having to entrust my money with them. (And later I found that the portfolio changes frequently :p)
-I consider myself a dividend investor and I prefer stocks with high dividend yield. But I also want to reap profit from time to time. I made myself a rule: if a stock's unrealized upward gain equals 15-20 years of average dividend and I do not plan to hold it long term, I sell it, keep the gains, and then reinvest roughly the same amount of original principals into another stock. This makes me sell a stock or two and then buy one or two every quarter. Kinda stupid thinking backward, but hey I do want to get some fast cash out of my stocks from time to time. I was able to cash out some of my gains at the top of S&P500 last year with this strategy; still I am hit hard by the current turmoil.
-I buy both physical gold bars/coins and gold ETF. Say what you like or don't like about gold, but people are so accustomed to fleeing into gold amid turmoil, it still is a safe haven asset in the foreseeable future I believe.
-I don't buy any, ANY stock from Chinese companies listed in the US. I don't even hold an ETF of Chinese stocks and market---I can't control if some of my ETFs/Funds have exposure to Chinese companies, but I just don't buy anything focused on China. One reason is that my family is in China and they already invest inChinese market, but there is also another lesson learned by myself. Having worked part time at a financial website for a year and having translated many documents and interviews of Chinese companies, I just know how much shit these companies put out just to get listed in the US. This is absolutely not rational and I know it. This also makes me miss huge gains of Alibaba, Baidu etc but I am very firm at staying away from Chinese companies. The same principle I think should apply to Hong Kong stock exchange. There are just so many shitty Chinese companies listed there.
-Yes I do buy actively managed mutual funds. Obsession with diversification is one reason. But I do believe that actively managed funds have a slightly better chance of hedging against risks than passive or index funds/ETFs (not that I don't buy them). Currently, my conservative strategy mutual fund is doing better than my moderate strategy one, recording a positive.
-I realize that mentality is an important and tricky thing. A lot of investors are not very unsettled by losing money but will regret enormously not being able to reap profit that they believe they "should have" gained. I try very hard to escape from this type of mentality. I only seek to beat the inflation with my dividend. I've recorded a steady 3%-4% dividend yield from my portfolio in the past few years (not counting gains from selling stocks) and I am happy with it.
-I don't have any virtual currency holdings. If only I had the guts to buy some Bitcoin a few years back (compare with the last statement to see irony LOL).
-Resources that I frequently rely on:
Bloomberg: subscribed for monthly subscription. News source.
Dividend.com: subscribed for premium to track my dividend stock ratings and yield.
Investopedia: frequent go-to website for knowledge and terms.
etfdb.com: did not subscribe but I frequently check this website for ETF recommendations and info (limited in free edition). Seems to come from the same team that operates dividend.com.
Happy investing and best of luck to everyone! Hope we will get through these difficult times and come out stronger.

Guest Bio
Heatherm Huang
Huang is the Co-Founder of Measurable Data Token (MDT), a decentralized data exchange ecosystem connecting users, data providers, and data buyers and denominates the value of data.
As a Serial Entrepreneur, Huang got himself involved in the Research & Development of the world’s first ever talk-and-hold voice chat system, TalkBox, then the number one mobile chat application in China and across Southeast Asia in 2010. The hype around Talkbox had Tencent offering to acquire the mobile chat application that was turned down. Tencent then released a new version of Wechat, that holds the same talk-and-hold voice chat system that Talkbox has, now familiar to all,and it was at that time that Wechat broke the telecommunications industry. Talkbox and its competitors faded in the industry soon after.
Huang’s Talkbox venture was adapted in Chinese drama, Entrepreneurial Age, with renowned celebrities, Xuan Huang and Angelababy being the main characters.
Kiana Shek

The AMA
Kiana Shek (Left) & Heatherm Huang (Right)
Kiana: Hi Heatherm, it's our honor to have you here with us today. Could you please give us an introduction of MDT?
Heatherm: Hi Kiana, my pleasure to be here today. Definitely. The MDT is a blockchain-based distributed computing platform with smart contracts securely stored in the Ethereum blockchain. It denominates the value of data in this new economy. It connects users, data providers, and data buyers and denominates the value of data. The MDT launched two products:
  1. MyMDT Data Wallet, a decentralized application (Dapp) based on Ethereum that allows users to get rewarded for sharing anonymous data points and is a user-oriented portal in the MDT ecosystem.
  2. Measurable AI, a business-oriented alternative data analysis platform that turns anonymous data into sophisticated consumer insights.
Kiana: That's such an interesting concept. I am curious to know, and I'm sure so does everyone, how did MDT come about?
Heatherm: The mission behind MDT is to solve our own problems. Back in 2016, our team started venturing into data under the guidance under the guidance of Gmail creator, Paul Buchheit. Paul mentioned that the most valuable thing about Gmail is not the service itself, but the data. Gmail data enables Google to create personalized and intelligent products for its users, and helps Google build better artificial intelligence. Our product, Measurable AI, is also built to understand the market by gathering electronic receipts from billions of online consumers, thereby increasing consumer data value. The more familiar we are with the big data industry, the better we can understand its problems. In data, privacy and traceability have always been contradictory issues. Although Google uses user data to provide better services to users, it is still resisted by users to date.
As data providers, we often try to prove that our data sources are real, and all data points come from real users of our own platforms. However, to prove this, the privacy and anonymity of real users will be compromised to some extent. On the other hand, data buyers also find it a challenge to ensure that the data products they will get are effective. In data, blockchain can solve this problem. After many years of exploration in the field of consumer products and big data, our team realized that we have to compensate consumers who have contributed valuable data.
We finally launched MDT at the end of 2017. We believe that the monetization of user data will be ubiquitous in the future, and we hope to use the results we have established to start this ecosystem.
Kiana: Thank you so much for explaining in such detail. I want to know who your target markets are and how you strategize in marketing your products across different regions of the world?
Heatherm: Southeast Asia, China, Brazil, and India will be our main target markets. They all have huge potential to expand and sustain the development of Measurable AI. At present, the main promotion channel of MyMDT data wallet is still the mainstream of users based on MailTime. Our upcoming independent app that focuses on the concept of "data cashback" will also become a major promotion channel, and its audience covers not only the cryptocurrency user group, but also the mainstream user group. Promotion services in different regions will be tailored to local market conditions. For example, the most common transaction data in the European and American markets is still credit card data, but in some emerging markets such as China, it is mobile payment data, and the consumer behavior and habits of users are also different. In different countries and regions, we will also adopt different promotion forms and modify our products to suit varying needs.
Kiana: Got it. Back to today's topic, what is MDT's alternative data that users should be concerned about? How is it related to MDT?
Heatherm: Alternative data refers to unconventional, unexpected, and unidentified potential data. Unlike traditional data sources such as public financial reports, alternative data is not well known. This is where its value lies. Measurable AI is a blockchain-driven alternative data provider at the present day.
Kiana: I believe users have a new understanding of alternative data now. Is MDT an option for both data providers and crypto asset investors? How will MDT benefit investors?
Heatherm: Alternative data providers are responsible for collecting, cleaning, analyzing and understanding data collected from non-traditional sources. For example, providers can assess the community's response to crypto assets to predict their future value and price movements. Although they are valuable, they do not fully reflect the company's operating conditions.
In today's data-driven era, investors need more than endless numbers on spreadsheets. They need insightful data to make informed decisions in the market. Certain financial markets, such as encrypted assets, do not revolve around traditional financial data sources. Cryptocurrencies like Ethereum or Bitcoin cannot be effectively analyzed through financial statements because their prices are determined by factors other than common data sources. Alternative data fills this gap. As the name suggests, alternative data refers to information obtained from non-traditional sources (such as social media and consumer trends), which helps investors have a deeper understanding of investment tools.
Kiana: The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is rampant, has Measurable Data been affected in development? What measures have you taken to counter the challenge for the safety of the team? What contribution has MDT made to society against COVID-19?
Heatherm: Due to the pandemic, the MDT team worked at home for 3 months until May when the team returned to office. However, the great impact COVID-19 has on the global economy, the demand for alternative data has increased for hedge fund clients. In the past few months, we have served more than 10 hedge funds and seller research institutions, providing them with first-hand consumer insights for many listed companies to analyze the pandemic's impact on the revenue of these companies and the speed of recovery. A few weeks ago, I accepted an interview with Bloomberg. I mentioned that the recent pandemic and the Luckin Coffee scandal has greatly boosted the demand for alternative data because hedge funds hope to use alternative data to monitor the pandemic's impact on major companies and its recovery rate. This is the value of alternative data.
Kiana: What do Alternative Data providers do? Is MDT an Alternative Data provider and Cryptoasset investor at the same time? How does the data benefit the investor?
Heatherm: Alternative data providers are the ones responsible for collecting, cleaning, analyzing, and making sense of data collected from non-traditional sources. For example, a provider may assess how the community is reacting to a crypto asset to predict its value and price movements in the future. Though valuable, they don't give the full picture of how a company is doing.
In today's data-driven landscape, investors require more than endless numbers on spreadsheets. They need insightful data that is actionable enough for them to make informed decisions in the market.
Certain markets like crypto assets also don't revolve around traditional financial data sources. Cryptocurrencies like Ethereum or Bitcoin cannot be analyzed efficiently with financial statements since their prices are determined by factors outside of commonly used data sources.
Alternative data fill this gap. As the name suggests, alternative data is information derived from non-traditional sources — like social media and consumer trends — that help investors obtain more in-depth insights on investment vehicles.
Kiana: Wow, Alternative Data providers play such a crucial role in the economy. How does MDT ensure that data security and privacy are well protected under regulations like GDPR?
Heatherm: In an increasingly digitized world, huge quantities of "alternative data" are being generated every day which can complement or substitute for traditional financial data (such as information on loan payments, defaults and bankruptcies) and open the door to financial services for previously unserved or underserved customers.
Data protection and privacy require a new way of thinking and preparation as regulatory or institutional frameworks to protect individuals and firms either do not exist or are rapidly outpaced by technological advances.
Kiana: Makes sense. The world will only get more digitized each day. Who do you consider your competitors and why do you think you are better than them?
Heatherm: Projects that share similar ideas of compensating users for sharing rewards are DataWallet, and GXChain.
DataWallet recently pivoted to a data compliance service platform for startups. GXChian also rewards users for sharing data, however, their focus is on users' personal information for credit checking and user profiling.
MDT is focused on anonymous and aggregated consumer transactional data for industry insights' purpose, and we endeavour to never involve any personal data.
Although we both reward users for sharing data points, we share different business models and positioning on what type of data to get involved in and how users can monetize over their data.
We believe the scenarios MDT creates now is more likely to be adopted by the public.
  1. It involves only aggregated and anonymous data points for a transparent purpose
  2. It is easier for users to get started without privacy issues (on blockchain, but accessed through user-friendly dapps
  3. It benefits the data buyers financially and socially for joining an initiative of a company compensating users for data.

Large Enterprise Adoption of Blockchain is happening, enabled by Quant Network’s Overledger

Large Enterprise Adoption of Blockchain is happening, enabled by Quant Network’s Overledger
https://medium.com/@CryptoSeq/large-enterprise-adoption-of-blockchain-is-happening-enabled-by-quant-networks-overledger-32321b650115
This is Part Two in the mini-series looking at Quant Network. You can see Part One here as well as links to other articles at the bottom of this post.
Quant Network have achieved incredible levels of adoption since launching Overledger less than a year ago. Their growth strategy is to partner with multinational global organisations with huge amounts of employees to then host / implement / take Overledger to each of their own clients. So one Partnership, leads to exponentially more and is the fastest way to scale rather than trying to partner with each customer individually. This is how companies such as Oracle grew so fast and Microsoft with their Partner Network.
These are multinational global organisations with 100,000 + employees, this is the scale that we are working towards to take Overledger to the mass market. We can’t do it one by one in each country and sign them up but we can partner with someone that has 100 customers and they can take it to all their customers as well which helps with the adoption of our technology” — Gilbert Verdian
Let’s start with arguably the biggest partnership for any Blockchain company listed on Coinmarketcap, the leading Financial Network Provider in Europe, SIA.

SIA

  • Provide the leading Financial Network in Europe with more than 100 Tier 1 banks connected, 44 Trading venues (including the main international stock markets in Milan, Rome, London, Frankfurt and New York) and other financial institutions covering the entire trading process from pre-trading to post-trading
  • process 14 Billion institutional services transactions, 7.2 billion card transactions, 3 billion payments, 51.7 billion financial transactions and carried 1,204 terabytes of data on the network
  • SIA in partnership with Colt and SWIFT are the only two network providers awarded a 10 year tender commissioned by the European Central Bank for the provisioning of connectivity services allowing European central and commercial banks, central depositories, automated clearing houses and other payment service providers to connect directly to Eurosystem market infrastructures through a single access interface (Eurosystem Single Market Infrastructure Gateway — ESMIG).
  • SIA’s SIAchain is the leading blockchain architecture in Europe connecting 570 Banks, Central Banks, Trading Venues and other Financial Institutions using R3’s Corda, Permissioned variants of Ethereum and Hyperledger Fabric.
  • SIA have Integrated Overledger into the leading blockchain architecture in Europe SIAchain so that all of the 570 banks, Central Banks, Trading venues etc can benefit from Blockchain Interoperability.
“Since the European launch of our private infrastructure SIAchain, we are at the forefront of innovation in blockchain technology with the aim of supporting financial markets with a high-performance and secure architecture and a clear governance model. We actively continue on our path of innovation and the achievement of a fully interoperable blockchain network is the foremost objective we want to reach with the collaboration of Quant Network and its disruptive vision on DLT”, says Daniele Savarè, Innovation & Business Solutions Director, SIA.
https://youtu.be/0cNmGrLPoTo
So what we’ve done is instead of just announcing one client and one thing, we’re announcing that we’re working with SIA. So, SIA is the leading European payment infrastructure. And what we’re doing with SIA is interconnecting blockchain networks with SIA, and doing settlements, which are central bank settlements, with the central bank in Italy. So what Overledger is doing is we’re actually bringing blockchain and interoperability to all of SIA’s clients, which are 580 banks. So, Overledger could be rolled out to all these institutions, financial services, banks, at scale, and have interoperability to get the benefits of this.

Blockchain Predictions in 2020

Blockchain Predictions in 2020
The year of 2019 has been a great year for blockchain development. As we move into the new year, let’s take a look at what are the popular blockchain predictions in 2020.
https://preview.redd.it/oceqmyw0zp941.png?width=650&format=png&auto=webp&s=edca797f125700870c1c5b5ea12047c7d9e3d9d7
  1. The Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) goes mainstream in China first
Since 2014, China’s central bank has been working on a project called “DC/EP”: Digital Currency/Electronic Payments. In the past few months, China’s DCEP had been a hot topic all around the world. Many people assumed that China will start pilots in 2-3 months. At this stage, the release of DCEP is still highly anticipated. In 2020, DCEP may usher in a truly comprehensive landing.
It is reported that China’s central bank has now launched a formal pilot program. The pilot project will go out of the central bank system and be led by the People's Bank of China while the four major state-owned commercial banks and the three major telecom operators will jointly participate in the project. It is said that the pilot project will be launched in Shenzhen and Suzhou. DCEP can not only be used as an inter-bank settlement tool, but also can be applied in various scenarios such as transportation, education, and medical treatment, reaching C-end users and generating frequent applications.
If the pilot had gone successfully, DCEP will expand the landing regions and application scenarios in 2020, thus quickly enter the payment system under the governmental support. The full implementation of DCEP, on the one hand, can be used as a payment and settlement tool which can strengthen the supervision of fund transfers, improve financial stability, and enhance anti-corruption and anti-money laundering capabilities. On the other hand, it can also replace traditional digital currencies such as Bitcoin to a certain extent, reduce the threshold for foreigners to use electronic money in China, and improve the convenience for Chinese consumers when they go abroad.
In addition, from the beginning of its release to widespread use by the public, DCEP will definitely experience a process of popularization and application. Payment technology-related services and manufacturers will gain new development opportunity, such as payment institutions with C-end (personal) payment service experience, companies with a large number of B-end (enterprise) merchant resources, commercial banks, payment system developers, etc..
But there is still reason to believe that a large number of unicorn companies will be emerged in these fields in 2020.
  1. Big breakthroughs will be made in “Blockchain+”
In the year of 2019, we have seen quite a few good blockchain technology landing applications.
Internet giants such as BAT (Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent) have accelerated construction and promotion of the application scenarios of the blockchain and the BAAS platform.
China’s President Xi Jinping has called for the country to accelerate its adoption of blockchain technologies as a core for innovation.
With the gradual maturity of technology and the support of national policies, Blockchain + will accelerate its rapid development in 2020. It will be integrated in all walks of life, and there will be large-scale commercial outbreaks.
  1. The appearance of the Chinese national Digital Currency Exchange
The digital currency exchanges, which have always been on the top of the food chain, didn’t have a good time in 2019. In the second half of 2019, the market for digital currencies continued to be sluggish. Issues such as low transaction volume, frequent security incidents, and tightening regulations once pushed the exchange in the teeth of the storm. Since October 2019, China continued to implement strict regulations on digital currency transactions. Many people started to worry that exchanges will come to an end, just like the P2P online loan platform. But, it is not going to happen. On the contrary, it is likely that digital currency exchanges will thrive in 2020.
As the China’s DCEP carries forward, there is a great possibility that it will be released within 2020. Also, it is said that the ambiguous attitude of China government towards digital currency exchanges is because the government is still in its investigation. National exchanges are in urgent need upon the release of DCEP.
  1. Bitcoin halving may not usher in a bull market
“Halving” has been a hot word in 2019 for cryptocurrency enthusiasts. Many ordinary users and cryptocurrency trading institutions have convinced that the third round of bitcoin halving in 2020 will bring a new bull market since the bear market in 2018.
The first having of Bitcoin came on November 28, 2012. The block reward had dropped from 50 to 25 Bitcoin. In 2013, the price of Bitcoin went from around $20 at the beginning of the year to a peak of $265, with a maximum increase of 1200%.
On July 10, 2016, Bitcoin was halved for the second time. Following the second having, in 2017, Bitcoin increased from $1457 to a historical peak of $20,000.
The third Bitcoin halving will come on May 14, 2020, and the Bitcoin block reward will be halved from 12.5 to 6.25 Bitcoin. The first two Bitcoin halvings have brought the soaring of the price of Bitcoin. Will the bull market come following the third halving? Will the third halving make the price of Bitcoin skyrocket again?
Let us have a look at the first two halvings before we make an conclusion.
In March, 2013, the new Cypriot president announced that the country’s banking system would have to get new funds by seizing a percentage of the accounts of all depositors.
A few days later, Cyprus’ inhabitants went wild and some of them turned to Bitcoin. As a consequence, the digital currency’s value started changing very quickly, rising from $30 to $265 in a few days.
Bitcoin soared to enormous heights in 2017 to over $20,000 for a single digital coin. Most of the people have agreed that the soaring was was linked with the Ethereum token issuance mechanism. Blockchain projects can issue their own tokens based on the Ethereum ERC20 system to raise funds from ordinary public investors.
Since the early ICO investment has achieved good returns. Many investors and their funds entered the market, thus opening the 2017 super bull market.
In summary, every big rise in Bitcoin is not necessarily related to the halving of Bitcoin output. There are related economic and political factors behind its soaring. Therefore, halving the output of Bitcoin in 2020 may not be able to stimulate a new round of bull market.

Da Hongfei interviewed by Dutch Financial Times, states he "was contacted by Chinese regulators to provide information before crackdown, and Chinese mining ban is nonsense and never confirmed"

The Dutch Financial Times (www.fd.nl) (leading financial newspaper of the Netherlands) published an interview with Da Hongfei this weekend. The article is (naturally) in Dutch and behind a paywall, but please find a Google Translate-extract below.
Main points: - Chinese regulators have not specifically targeted NEO during the recent crackdown on ICO's/Chinese exchanges; - Da Hongfei was contacted by Chinese regulators to provide information and "suggestions"; - Chinese mining ban is nonsense, never confirmed; - Da Hongfei agrees with current Chinese crackdown to prevent scams; - Da Hongfei does not expect collaboration with Chinese government on short term, but medium-term "why not?".
What are your thoughts? He seems confident which is reassuring to me.
https://fd.nl/beurs/1219457/chinese-cryptokeizer-ik-heb-geen-toezichthouder-gezien?utm_source=nieuwsbrief&utm_campaign=fd-ochtendnieuwsbrief&utm_medium=email&utm_content=20170924&s_cid=671 Article:
Chinese Crypto-emperor: 'I have not seen a regulator'
The storm that the Chinese government unleashed with its interventions on the market for crypto coins has calmed. That is stated by Da Hongfei, founder of China's largest cryptocurrency Neo, in conversation with Het Financieele Dagblad. "What else can you do?", He said in response to the ban on stock markets with crypto coins (ICOs). The price of the bitcoin fell sharply after China's interventions. "But then the value of the coin rose again," says Da.
The authorities did not aim at him or Neo with the recent action, says Da. "No, none of the supervisors have contacted me. But before they started cleaning up the market, I was asked for information and suggestions. "
Messages on various news sites that China would also consider a ban on the cryptocurrency mines are myths according to Da. "It's never confirmed. I think the supervisors are particularly worried about the challenges that bitcoin and other crypto currencies entail. The status of fiduciary money came under pressure. '
Fear of pressure on Chinese currency Since the end of last year, there are strict capital restrictions that make it difficult to get big sums of yuan out of the country in fear of sustained downward pressure on the Chinese currency. "It is worried that crypto currencies will take over existing ways of money transactions and investment. One is afraid to lose control. "
China's actions are not self-evident, rather, the withdrawal of capital through an ICO has already been raised by US regulatory authorities, and also in Russia, the government is concerned about crypto currencies. Although China is the first country to shake the market, Da believes that digital coins have a bright future. "You may own bitcoins or other crypt currencies in China. That's not illegal. "It's just a matter of getting out of a trading platform. Different managers of trading platforms are reportedly not allowed to leave the country.
Blockchain "You should not mix up blockchain technology and trading in crypto currencies", the Chinese Crypto emperor continues. Blockchain, a method of tracking decentralized transactions with computers, is the foundation of the crypto coins. But this technology is already introduced for many sectors, such as insurance or logistics. Da says that China is encouraging the development of blockchain technology. The People's Bank, China's central bank, would work on its own digital currency.
"I think you can better check what's happening in South Korea and Japan. That applies to the bitcoin, and also to Neo ' Neo, set up in 2014 to allow smart contracts through blockchain, has been busy for a long time. Last year, Neo held for Rmb 30 mln (€ 3.8 mln) a crypto IPO, ie an Initial Coin Offer (ICO). Before, one paid less than a penny for NEO, in mid-August, Neo was valued at over $ 52, which meant a market capitalization of $ 2.4 billion.
Becoming a multi-millionaire The 37-year-old Da became multimillionaire in a short period of time. "On paper, yes," he laughs, leaning back in a comfortable armchair in the luxurious W hotel in Beijing. The Neo-founder understands that traders strongly respond to the ongoing flow of news from China, but believes that markets are more giving such news more attentione than necessary.
The influence of Chinese traders has been decreasing for a long time, he says. "I think you can better check what's happening in South Korea and Japan. That applies to the bitcoin, and also to the Neo. China will continue to be an important factor in the course of the short term, but I think most of the issued Neo's are now in foreign hands. "
The course of the Neo has fallen sharply since mid-August, but that does not seem to keep Da awake at night. 'The price moves on the basis of sentiment. The way the market looks at the product does not always allign with the way that product is currently advancing. I'll keep an eye on the price, but I do not trade much with Neo. "

Blood bath Similar to the significant share of Chinese crypto traders in the record hikes of recent months, it was the Chinese who caused a crackdown on the global crypto markets. Initial coin offerings (ICOs), or disguised stock issues by crypto currencies, were prohibited.
Trading platforms must have closed their doors by 30 September, the Chinese authorities reported earlier this month. Also transactions between persons, so-called peer-to-peer transactions
'What the Chinese are doing now is the right thing ' is the firm belief of Da Hongfei, who in 2012 unsuccessfully tried to set up a trading platform, but founded Neo much shortly thereafter. "The vast majority of ICO projects were fake and fraud." He refers to the internet bubble that burst in 2000. "When you started a business that ended on .com, you could easily attract capital. The same is what you see with the ICO crazy. '
It is preferable to focus on the roll out of Neo's technology. "We want to be a widely applicable ecosystem with many developers on which many smart contracts can be built." These include contracts for the transfer of real estate or shares. "There we still have plenty of room to grow."
Collaboration with government? Will Neo succeed in expanding on its own, or should it seek cooperation with the government, a party that is never far away in China? "The government is not a business," replies Da, who, with his consulting company AntChain, previously agreed with the local government of Guiyang for a blockchain project in which citizens can judge each other on good behavior. "Even though strong companies are often encouraged by the government to compete internationally." The latter has happened to Baidu and Alibaba, says Da, referring to two successful Chinese internet giants. The question is whether China applies that model to blockchain, and Neo is given a role similar to Alibaba. "I do not expect the government to call me in the short term and say," Let's use Neo as the blockchain technology infrastructure in China. "But in the medium term? Why not? I think it's possible. "

A Couple of Notes on the 2013/14 Bubble VS. 2017 Bubble

I'm seeing a lot of posts comparing the 2017 Bubble to the 2013-14 Bubble. I think the comparisons are fair. However, many people are mixing up what happened in 2013-14 and the timeline. One of the most common mistakes I'm seeing is that the 2013-14 bubble popped due to Mt. Gox insolvency. That is false.
The 2013-14 bubble was abrupt, even when compared to the 2017 bubble. The price skyrocketed from $200 USD to $1200 USD in one month. From November 1st to November 30th, BTC went up basically 6X. Back in 2013-14, there were basically two markets which were getting solid volume. BTC/USD and BTC/CNY. BTC/USD was mostly taking place on Mt. Gox, Bitstamp, Coinbase, and BTC-e. BTC/CNY was mostly taking place on OKCoin and BTCChina. There was no Korea or Japan back then, which definitely played a major role in the recent bull market.
And while Chinese exchanges were creating a lot of fake volume back in 2013-14 through 0% exchange fees, the fact was that China was leading the markets. [1] They consistently held a 10%+ premium over USD exchanges during the bull run. At the height of the bubble in China, before the PBOC stepped in with its clampdown on Bitcoin, China Telecom and Baidu announced support for Bitcoin. It was on the verge of literally replacing the CNY. [2]
On November 30th, 2013, a rumor emerged that the PBOC (People's Bank of China / China Government) was about to crack down on Bitcoin. A mass panic ensued. The price crashed from $1200 USD to $780 USD. In one day. That's a 35% crash in a single day. However, the market quickly bounced back as people argued that these rumors were fabricated. However, this rebound was short lived.
On December 5th, 2013, the PBOC made an official announcement. The government banned financial institutions from interacting with Bitcoin. They also clarified that products / services in China could not be priced in BTC (they must be priced in CNY). The markets went straight down on this news. From $1150 USD when it broke to $540 on December 7th. A 3 day drop of over 50%.
Where was Mt. Gox in all this? They were chugging along, delaying fiat withdrawals. Bitcoin withdrawals were working fine. Deposits too. For much of November and December there was very little noise about Mt.Gox actually being insolvent. The overwhelming market sentiment on the matter was that their banks were being disrupted by the US Government investigations into Silkroad. This was true to a very mild extent.
If you'd like to argue that people knew Mt. Gox was insolvent at the time of the 2013-14 bubble crash, I'd like to point out that Bitfinex basically had the exact same issues arise in 2017. Fiat withdrawals and deposits were basically turned off. Clearly Bitfinex was a different situation in hindsight (we hope!), but initially it was playing out just the same as Mt. Gox. The markets never really reacted to Bitfinex fiat issues, just as they didn't react to the Mt. Gox issues. There was so much money going through Mt. Gox that it had a Titanic feel to it. The majority of people bought their first BTC on Mt. Gox.
The Chart: https://www.tradingview.com/chart/BTCUSD/wlTsEFJ4-Reason-Behind-2013-14-Bitcoin-Bear-Market/
This chart outlines the dates of the key events in the 2013-14 bubble crash. The most significant event in the crash was absolutely the China ban. That is what kicked off the 2013-14 bubble crash, and it definitely had the most profound impact on price. While the Mt. Gox fiasco certainly did not help the markets, it's not the reason for the bubble and should not be quoted as the reason. [3]
So in conclusion, when people are comparing the 2014 bubble with the 2017 bubble, it should be noted that they are very different. But not for the reasons most people assume. They are different because the 2014 bubble was almost entirely based on the Chinese market, and it was squashed by the PBOC themselves by imposing big regulations.
Today, the markets are certainly more spread out and there are less single points of failure. There is no single event which turned the bull market to a bear market this time around, although I personally believe we ran out of gas this time around because of regulation in Korea and China.

China's recent guidance great for Bitcoin in China, terrible for the US.

(Originally posted to bitcoin...the 10th circle of hell since Wednesday) (Thank you mods for this board.)
America believes that yesterday's People's Bank of China statement on Bitcoin constituted a "crackdown." They said it's not a currency, banks can't touch it, and payment processors can't facilitate transactions. Therefore, China is trying to reign in Bitcoin. This is completely false. With this announcement, China now has one of the most favorable and friendly regulatory environments in the world. China has acted quickly and decisively, and established very clear permissible behaviors re: Bitcoin (esp. vis-a-vis the US). And the US, be it the media or the government, doesn't understand this development.
Generally speaking, China had to balance two vital concerns. One, how to mitigate Bitcoin's potential to circumvent the State Administration of Foreign Exchange. (People's Bank controls all foreign exchange for the Chinese banking system). And two, how to corner and keep as much Bitcoin wealth as possible.
In declaring Bitcoin a "virtual commodity" AND expressly saying Bitcoin is NOT a currency, they avoided the utter mess of having to integrate Bitcoin into current foreign exchange controls. It's a pretty sizable challenge to both allow internal Chinese bitcoin transactions, and forbid all international bitcoin transactions. Even if that was possible, they certainly have no idea how to do it at present. Further, had they permitted banks and payment processors to do anything involving Bitcoin whatsoever, they would've tremendously exacerbated the wealth flight problem. They can't declare it a currency without regulating it as a fiat currency, and they can't permit banks and payment processors to handle it w/o risking capital flight. Assuming China's goal is to not blow up their own foreign exchange controls, which seems likely, a strict separation between Bitcoin and bank is really the only option they had.
In addition, by declaring Bitcoin a virtual commodity and placing its regulation under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), China hasn't burdened Bitcoin's growth with banking regulations and controls. Now, exchanges like BTCChina know they don't have to become a bank or financial institution - they are simply a virtual commodity company. MIIT is the regulatory body that approves and manages, essentially, anything having to do with the internet (save for content). While "payment processors" cannot handle Bitcoin because it's not a currency, facilitating virtual commodity (which is "private property") trading and exchange (even for goods and services) looks to be perfectly legal. Expect the MIIT to approve a "payment processor" for BTC as something like a "virtual commodity processor." This would now be a "natural" expansion of BTCChina's business platform.
So this guidance achieves both goals; China reduces the risk of capital flight while also establishing the regulatory future of BTC as free of undue financial institution regs. The US has effectively gone in the opposite direction - since BTC can be defined various ways, and there have been multiple "official" declarations of what it is, various federal agencies / regulators are involved, and most are bewildered. Exchanges must have banking relationships, have state-by-state money transmitter licenses, surety bonds, etc... BTC faces nearly all the financial services barriers-to-entry the US can muster. Not so in China.
Separating Bitcoin and bank, expressly defining BTC, and assigning a regulator are brilliant moves by the Chinese. The rules and regulations around "virtual commodities" are now free to develop unencumbered by the Banking system's controls. Unlike the US, China has laid the legal and regulatory framework that can best facilitate Bitcoin growth.

Lisk Highlights, April 26th 2019: Lisk HQ and one of its sidechain project's offices are both visited by a Chinese delegation.

Hello there. Here is my selection for today's highlights and interesting items within the Lisk ecosystem and beyond.....

Lisk HQ and one of its sidechain project's offices are both visited by a Chinese delegation.

On Tuesday, April 23rd, Mat Piaggi (Lisk Community Lead), and Jacob Kowalewski (Lisk Business Developer), played the role of genial hosts to a delegation of Chinese journalists and business representatives. They were in Berlin to learn more about the Lisk project and its wider eco-system. They spent the first half of the day at Lisk HQ then later in the day they headed over to MADANA HQ. Breyer/FENBUSHI Capital/Circle/Poloniex

Okay, Okay, just entertain me for a moment here...
Big news today Circle aquires Poloniex.
Circle Investors: Jim Breyer and FENBUSHI
Breyer and FENBUSHI backup from the linked article:
"While many Western companies have gotten crushed in their attempts to cross the Pacific, Circle’s executives have navigated the waters successfully so far. The company has taken money from strategic Chinese investors, including Fenbushi Capital, China Everbright Investment Management, China International Capital Corporation, and Baidu Ventures. In 2016, Jim Breyer launched a $1 billion China-focused fund in partnership with IDG Capital Ventures, another Circle investor, and he has toured China with Allaire to meet entrepreneurs and government officials on several occasions. “Much of the innovation today in fintech is occurring outside the U.S.,” says Breyer, who has a long history with Allaire’s earlier ventures, including Macromedia, which acquired the eponymous Allaire Corp. for $360 million in 2001, as well as the video service Brightcove, which held a successful IPO in 2012. Few stateside companies “have their pulse on global blockchain innovation in the way that the leaders of Circle do,” Breyer says."
Vechain Investors: Jim Breyer and FENBUSHI Backup: https://www.vechain.org/about/#backers
Also it might be important to note that Goldman Sachs is invested in Circle.
Can you guess what this might mean for VeChain? A big US fiat on ramp.
Poloniex was one of the first exchanges to list ETH, guess who was an early investor in ETH (Jim Breyer).
Backup from article:
"The desk struck a relationship with Poloniex, its Boston neighbor, after Poloniex became one of the earliest exchanges to list Ether, the native coin of Ethereum, the biggest cryptocurrency network next to Bitcoin. Poloniex, which for now trades only digital tokens (about 70 types), needed a way to translate its cryptocurrency exchange fees into fiat money like U.S. dollars—“to buy cookies and milk and pay rent,” as Allaire likes to say. Often Poloniex did so through Circle’s trading desk. And so began a relationship that would culminate in Monday’s acquisition."
Am I crazy is anyone following me here?
Link: (in this link they talk about FENBUSHI/BreyeCircle and Poloniex being one of the first exchanges to list ETH)
http://fortune.com/2018/02/26/circle-cryptocurrency-trade-bitcoin/
Jim Breyer on Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire (from linked article):
Breyer compares Allaire to Mark Zuckerberg in terms of long-term strategic thinking: Just as the Facebook founder “instinctively understood” the need for an overarching, sticky social platform, not just a network for colleges, Allaire has designs on an entirely new financial operating system—not just another bank. “Our vision was always how to fuse the existing financial system with cryptocurrency as a hybrid, digital model,” Allaire says.
A little bit about Circles vision and product (from linked article above):
"But the trading desk is only part of Circle’s vision. The company has a bevy of other products, too. There’s its Venmo-like Circle Pay app, which lets users send money with the ease of a text message. There’s its soon-to-launch Circle Invest app, which aims to encourage small, steady investments in cryptocurrencies the way Robinhood does for stocks. And there’s its Centre protocol, an open-source project designed to make disparate digital wallets—like those from Alipay, PayPal, or, yes, Circle—interoperable with one another."

Perspectives on each of the TOP 10 cryptos -- your thoughts?

DISCLAIMER: These are obviously just my personal thoughts, and everyone is free to have differing views. I've held eight out of ten of these over the past years, but at the moment hold just four. Hopefully this post could serve as a discussion starter, with different people sharing their analytically/rationally justified arguments for being bullish/bearish on different cryptos.
BITCOIN. The coin that started it all and got most of us interested in cryptocurrencies to begin with. The hands-down leader in adoption, and very robust in doing what it's doing. I'm not bearish on Bitcoin, as such, and I think as a distributed/democratic store of value it certainly has its place for the long term. What I don't like are the political battles between Bitcoin Core/Blockstream and the miners, neither of which really is objectively looking after just the interests of the common people. One can also criticize Bitcoin for the high fees and scalability challenges, but over long enough a period, the challenges are fundamentally the same for any other blockchain-based currency. In summary, I'm not loving the governance setup and thereby the slowish technological progress, but nevertheless think Bitcoin is here to stay.
ETHEREUM. A highly disruptive force across industries, unlocking massive potential in enterprises around industrial-scale automation, trust, robustness etc. The EEA is fantastic, and the investment into Ethereum-based development across large enterprises is just unparalleled. And I like the stronger leadership, which enables the technology to move ahead faster than Bitcoin. Yes, I love Ethereum, and really my only bigger question regarding the long-term value of Ethereum tokens is how much of the large-scale development will use ETH as is vs. having a solution based on the technology that is Ethereum, but not using the standard token (which is my main criticism towards Ripple).
RIPPLE. Highly targeted to unlock significant efficiency gains from using blockchain in banks, and would certainly expect it to get traction, as such. My main reservation -- and it's a big one -- is how much of the adoption will actually use the XRP token vs. just use the technology as a protocol, but not the token. In the latter scenario, the protocol itself could become as widely adopted as let's say TCP/IP (as maybe an absurdly extreme example), but the inventors of the protocol would really not get much benefit -- apart from maybe consulting and system integration business with the banks, I suppose similarly what IBM's business model is with HyperLedger -- while investors in the token would get pretty much nothing.
BITCOIN CASH. OK, how to put this... I suppose most of us liked getting some extra cash for our Bitcoins, but seriously, what is the long-term sustainability of BCH? Virtually all the developers went with Bitcoin, and the only real backers are a few (if not just one?) big miners. This is not a sustainable model for the long term. Sorry to be blunt, and happy to be proven otherwise with sound well-thought arguments.
LITECOIN. The silver to Bitcoin's gold, as they say. Yeah, I think that's true in many ways. And I like Charlie Lee and that due the stronger leadership Litecoin is able to move faster technologically than Bitcoin, but... on balance, being the 'little brother' of Bitcoin doesn't seem like a long-term viable value proposition. Let's say Bitcoin implements all the stuff they've planned on implementing, the Lightning Network and all that -- why would someone use Litecoin? There are network effects, and in large-scale deployment where your parents and cousins are using cryptocurrencies every day, the economies of scale (incl. stability) would favor the leader. So, I think Litecoin is a nice project, but don't see what its unique long-term value proposition is.
DASH: I apologize up front, I haven't really studied Dash in any great detail, but my impression is that what they're good at is marketing (incl. the somewhat catchy name) and driving adoption. Technologically, I don't see anything here that would make Dash competitive long-term -- not in terms of the technological vision nor a highly competent team (similar to Bitcoin Core, the Ethereum team and EEA, or on a smaller scale the IOTA team and the caliber of people they are bringing in). Again, I'm sorry if this was blunt, and happy to be proven wrong -- with facts and well-founded analytical/rational arguments.
NEM: I don't know too much about NEM, but what I have seen looks kind of good, to be honest. What I think the team is lacking the most is what Dash has in abundance: marketing savvy. The team is making good progress in adoption and the tech seems sound. On the other hand, "New Economy Movement" is not really the sexiest of names, and in general people don't quite seem to even know about the project, and the trading volumes of NEM have typically been the lowest of the TOP 10 cryptos. I would love to know more about NEM, and would be great to see the team get the project more into limelight and really onto the arena so that it's pros and cons vs. the other cryptos would be debated more.
MONERO: I've liked Monero for some time. However, as far as I know, it's main value proposition has been anonymity, and as other cryptos also implement similar mechanisms, I wonder what Monero's long-term value proposition and raison d'etre is. Keen to hear other people's thoughts on this. As a side note, which is not a criticism towards Monero itself, but more the community, is that as the value of Monero has been pushed up over the past few months largely driven by listing on the (highly gambling-oriented) Korean exchanges, there is a fair amount of "Monero is great because the value went up and therefore I bought into it also" kind of thinking. Again, not a criticism towards Monero itself, but when commenting why you think Monero is a great technology and has unique value-add for the long-term, please let's stick to real solid arguments.
IOTA. The project that seems to be sparking a lot of debate recently, incl. somewhat dirty tactics from people affiliated in competing projects masquerading as neutral/independent researchers. Anyway. What is unique about IOTA is that it's zero fee. That is highly, highly disruptive. Also, the tech has no limitation in tx/sec -- apart from speed of networks and economical cost of storage, the physical realities any technology has to deal with, of course, but no limitation similar to the block size with Bitcoin etc. The technology has also been designed to have quantum-resistant security, but as far as I know also other initiatives like Ethereum will implement similar mechanisms over time. But nothing else is really zero fee, not even any of the other DAG-based projects. This is massive. Now, let's be clear: IOTA is still in early development, and the team is aiming for production grade in 2018. They still have the Coordinator as 'training wheels' for the system, they had the somewhat funky/ballsy copy-protection mechanism in place, etc. And some of the key guys can be a bit edgy or borderline arrogant if challenged with incomplete facts/context/logic. That's all fair. But the bottom line for me is that the technology holds massive potential, and hence the key question is whether they have and are building the team to deliver on this vision. I have high confidence in the edgy-yet-capable core team, and the people they are bringing in are very impressive from top-notch researchers to folks like the former CIO of SAP and UBS.
NEO. I used to be more sceptical and critical about NEO, or Antshares, as it used to be called. It's been dubbed the 'Ethereum killer from China'. Well, based on what I know, it's certainly no Ethereum today -- nor do I see it as more of a threat to Ethereum than let's say Baidu has been a 'Google killer'. Having said that, the comparison also surfaces why I'm increasingly liking NEO. China is a special market. Which explains also the recent 'bans' on ICOs, exchanges, etc. -- and why Westerners often interpret these moves wrong and then over-react. But that's another story. Anyway, as China puts some regulation in place to protect its people from outright scams, local front-runners like NEO will certainly benefit, I would expect. And China will want to have its iconic leaders also in this tech, similarly as they've wanted to have in the Internet wave in the form of the Baidu, Tencent, Alibaba, etc. So, while NEO isn't technologically really in a place to compete head-to-head with Ethereum today, I think it has potential to become something significant over time. Because China.
Thanks for reading! Look forward to any comments -- but let's keep things civil. And don't be offended if I don't respond to comments; time is limited, and would really hope the discussion to take off between different contributors rather than a one-to-many debate.

HPB (High-Performance Blockchain) Whitepaper breakdown

If you'd like to read the first article I published on reddit on HPB, please take a look here
https://redd.it/7qt54x

People often skim over white papers as they simply cannot be bothered to read through them. Let’s be honest, most of them are as dull as dishwater and even more so when full of technical blockchain related buzzwords that most people new to cryptocurrencies simply don’t understand.

Well as someone now invested in High-Performance Blockchain (HPB), I want to know and understand what the company is trying to achieve, so I’ve spent some time dissecting the white paper and actually gathering the information behind the buzzwords to determine if the company offers real key differentiators and unique selling points that allow the proposal to stand separately from the competition.

So here is my breakdown of some of the key sections from the soon-to-be-updated HPB whitepaper

TPS

Ok so TPS stands for “transactions per second” and is reasonably well recognised in the world of blockchain but often misunderstood or under-appreciated. Essentially HPB are stating in their white paper that TPS is a bottleneck for all current blockchain solutions and this bottleneck restricts development and simply will not meet future business needs.

So let’s just explore this for a minute. Anyone who knows Bitcoin and Ethereum and have tried to transfer their coins from a wallet to an exchange or vice-versa, may at some point have experienced slow transfer or “transaction” times. This is usually when the network is congested, and transactions which usually take a few minutes, are suddenly slowed down considerably. Let's say you are transferring some Eth to an online exchange to buy another coin as you’ve noticed that this other coins price is dropping, and you want to catch the low price to buy in before the bounce……so you setup the transfer, increase your Ether Gwei to 50 to get things moving quicker, and then you wait for your 12 block confirmations to be confirmed before the Eth appears in your exchange wallet. You wait 10-15 minutes and the Eth suddenly appears, only to find the price as already bounced on the coin you wanted to buy and it’s already up 10% on what it happened to be 15 minutes ago! That delay has just cost you $500!

Delay can be extremely frustrating, and can often be expensive. Now whilst individuals tend to tolerate slight delays on occasion, (for now!) It will simply be unacceptable moving forward. Imagine typing in your pin at a cashpoint/ATM and having to wait 4-5 minutes to get your money! No way!

So TPS is important….in fact it’s more than important, it’s fundamental to the success of blockchain technology that TPS speeds improve, and blockchain networks scale accordingly! So how fast are current TPS rates of the big crypto’s?

Here is the estimated TPS of the Top 10 cryptos. I should point out that this is the CURRENT TPS speed. Almost all of the cryptos mentioned have plans in the pipeline to scale up and improve TPS using various ingenious solutions, but as of TODAY this is the average speed.

  1. Bitcoin ~7 TPS
  2. Ethereum ~15 TPS
  3. Ripple ~1000 TPS
  4. Bitcoin Cash ~40 TPS
  5. Cardano ~10 TPS
  6. Litecoin ~56
  7. Stellar ~3700
  8. NEM ~4 TPS
  9. EOS ~0 TPS
  10. NEO ~1000 TPS

Like I say, almost all of these have plans to increase transaction speed and plans to address scalability, but these are the numbers I have researched as of this particular moment in time.

Let’s compare this to Visa, the global payment processor, which has an “average” daily peak of around 4,500 TPS and is capable of 56,000 TPS.

Some of you may say, “Well that doesn’t matter, as in a few months’ time [insert crypto I own here] will be releasing [insert scalability plan of my crypto here] which means it will be capable of running [insert claimed future TPS speed of my crypto here] so my crypto will be the best in the world!”

But this isn’t the whole story….. far from it. You see this doesn’t address a fundamental element of blockchain…..and that is the PHYSICAL transference of information from one node to another to allow for block validation and consensus. You know….the point where the data processed moves up and down the OSI stack and hits the physical layer on the network card and gets transported through the physical Ethernet cable or fibre that takes it off to somewhere else.

Also, you have to factor in the actual transaction size (measured in bytes or kilobytes) that is being transferred. VISA transactions vary in size from about 0.2 kilobytes to a little over 1 kilobyte. In order to maintain 4500 TPS, and if we use an average of 0.5kb (512bytes) per transaction, then you need to be physically transporting approximately 2.25mb of data per second. OK so this seems tiny! We all have 100mb broadband at home and the NIC network cards in your computers are capable of running 10gb ….so 2.25mb is nothing…… for now!

If we go back to actual blocks on the blockchain, let’s first look at bitcoin. It has a fixed 1mb block size (1,000,000 bytes) so if bitcoin TPS is at around 7 TPS, then we need to be physically transporting 6.83mb per second per block. Still pretty small and easy to cope with….Well if that’s the case then why is bitcoin so slow?

Well if you consider the millions of transactions being requested every day, and that you can only fit 1mb of data into a single block, then if you imagine the first block in the queue gets processed first (max 1mb of data), but the rest of the transactions have to wait, to see if they hopefully are in the next block, or maybe the next one? Or maybe the next one? Or the next one?

Now the whole point of “decentralization” is that every node on the blockchain network is in agreement that the block is valid…this consensus typically takes around 10 minutes for the blockchain network to fully “sync” on the broadcasted block. Once the entire network is in agreement, they start to “sync” the next block. Unfortunately if your transaction isn’t at the front of the queue, then you can see how it might take a while for your transaction to get processed. So is there a way of moving to the front of the queue, similar to the way you can get a “queue jump pass” at a theme park? Sure there is….you can pay as higher-than-average transaction fee to get prioritized….but if the transaction fees are relative to the cryptocurrency itself, then the greater the value of the crypto becomes (i.e. the more popular it becomes), the higher the transaction fee becomes in order to allow you to make your transactions.

Once again using the cashpoint ATM analogy, it’s like going to withdraw your money, and being presented with some options on screen similar to that of, “You can have your money in less around 10 minutes for $50, or you can wait 20 minutes for $20, or you can camp out on the street and wait until tomorrow and get your money for $5”

So it’s clear to see the issue…..as blockchain scales up and more people use it, the value of it rises, the cost to use it goes up, and the speed of actually using it gets slower. This is not progress, and will not be acceptable as more people and businesses use blockchain to transact with money, information, data, whatever.

So what can be done? …Well you could increase the block size……more data held in a block means that you have a greater chance of being in a block at the front of the queue……Well that kind of works, but then you still have to factor in how long it takes for all nodes on the blockchain network to “sync” and reach consensus.

The more data per block, the more data there is that needs to be fully distributed.

I used visa as an example earlier as this processes very small amounts of transactional data. Essentially this average 512 bytes will hold the following information: transaction amount, transaction number, transaction date and time, transaction type (deposits, withdrawal, purchase or refund), type of account being debited or credited, card number, identity of the card acceptor (organization/store address) as well as the identity of the terminal (company name from which the machine operates). That’s pretty much all there is to a transaction. I’m sure you will agree that it’s a very small amount of data.

Moving forward, as more people and businesses use block-chain technology, the information transacted across blockchain will grow.

Let’s say, (just for a very simplistic example) that a blockchain network is being used to store details on a property deed via an Ethereum Dapp, and there is the equivalent of 32 pages of information in the deed. Well one ascii character stored as data represents one byte.

This “A” right here is one byte.

So if an A4 page holds let’s say 4000 ascii characters, then that’s 4000 bytes per page, or 4000x32= 128,000 bytes of data. Now if a 1mb block size can hold 1,000,000 bytes of data, then my single document alone has just consumed (128,000/1,000,000)*100 = 12.8% of a 1mb block!

Now going further, what if 50,000 people globally decide to transfer their mortgage deeds? Alongside those are another 50,000 people transferring their Will in another Dapp, alongside 50,000 other people transferring their sale-of-business documents in another Dapp, alongside 50,000 people transferring other “lengthy” documents in yet another Dapp? All of a sudden the network comes to a complete and utter standstill! That’s not to mention all the other “big data” being thrown around from company to company, city to city, and continent to continent!

Ok in some respects that's not really a fair example, as I mentioned the 1mb block limit with bitcoin, and we know that bitcoin was never designed to be anything more than a currency.

But that’s Bitcoin. Other blockchains are hoping/expecting people to embrace and adopt their network for all of their decentralized needs, and as time goes by and more data is sent around, then many (if not all) of the suggested scalability solutions will not be able to cope…..why?

Because sooner or later we won’t be talking about megabytes of data….we’ll be talking about GB of data….possibly TB of data on the blockchain network! Now at this stage, addressing this level of scalability will definitely not be purely a software issue….we have to go back to hardware!

So…finally coming to my point about TPS…… as time goes by, in order for block chains to truly succeed, the networking HARDWARE needs to be developed to physically move the data quickly enough to be able to cope with the processing of the transactions…..and quite frankly this is something that has not been addressed…..it’s just been swept under the carpet.

That is, until now. High-Performance Blockchain (HPB) want to address this issue…..they want to give blockchain the opportunity to scale up to meet customer demand, which may not be there right at this moment, but is likely to be there soon.

According to this website from just over a year ago, more data will be produced in 2017, then in the entire history of civilization spanning 5000 years!
https://appdevelopermagazine.com/4773/2016/12/23/more-data-will-be-created-in-2017-than-the-previous-5,000-years-of-humanity-/
That puts things into perspective when it comes to data generation and expected data transference.

Ok so visa can handle 56,000 TINY transactions per second….Will that be enough for block chain TPS in 5 years’ time? Well I’ll simply leave that for you to decide.

So what are HPB doing about this? They have been developing a specialist hardware accelerated network card known as a TOE card (TOE stands for TCP/IP Offload Engine) which is capable of supporting MILLIONS of transactions per second. Now there are plenty of blockchains out there looking to address speed and scaling, and some of them are truly fascinating, and they will most likely address scalability in the short term….but at some point HARDWARE will still be the bottleneck and this will still need to be addressed like the bad smell in the room that won’t go away. As far as I know (and I am honestly happy to stand corrected here) HPB are the ONLY Company right now who see hardware acceleration as fundamental to blockchain scalability.

No doubt more companies will follow over time, but if you appreciate “first mover advantage” you will see how critical this is from a crypto investment perspective.

Here are some images of the HBP board

GVM (General Virtual Machine mechanism)
The HPB General virtual machine is currently being developed to allow the HPB solution to work with other blockchains to enhance them and help them to scale. Currently the GVM is being developed for the NEOVM (NEO Virtual Machine) and The EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) with others planned for the future.

Now a lot of people feel that if Ethereum were not hampered with scalability issues, then it would be THE de-facto blockchain globally (possibly outside of Asia due to things like Chinese regulation) and that NEO is the “Ethereum of China” developed specifically to accommodate things like Chinese regulation. So if HPB is working on a hardware solution to help both Ethereum and NEO, then in my opinion this could add serious value to both blockchains.

Claim of Union Pay partnership
To quote directly (verbatim) from the whitepaper:
After listening to the design concept of HPB, China's largest financial data company UnionPay has joined as a partner with HPB, with the common goal of technological practice and exploration of financial big data and high-performance blockchain platform. UnionPay Wisdom currently handles 80% of China's banking transaction data, with an annual turnover of 80 trillion yuan. HPB will join hands with China UnionPay to serve all industry partners, including large banks, insurance, retail enterprises, fintech companies and so on.

Why is this significant? Have a read of this webpage to get an idea of the scale of this company:
http://usa.chinadaily.com.cn/business/2017-10/10/content_33060535.htm

Now some people will say, there’s no proof of this alliance, and trust me I am one of the biggest sceptics you will come across….I question everything!

Now at this stage I have no concrete evidence to support HPB’s claim, however let me offer you my train of thought. Whilst HPB hasn’t really been marketed in the West (a good thing in my opinion!) The leader of HPB Wang Xiaoming is literally attending every single major Asian blockchain event to personally present his solution to major audiences. HPB also has the backing of NEO, who angel invested the project.

Take a look at this YouTube video of Da Hongfei talking about NEO, and bringing up a slide at the recent “BlockChain Revolution Conference” on January 18th 2018 – If you don’t want to watch the entire video (it’s obviously all about NEO) then skip forward to exactly 9m13s into the video and take a look at the slide he brings up. You will see it shows HPB. Do you honestly thing Da Hongfei, the leader of NEO, would bring up details of a company that he felt to be untrustworthy to share with a global audience?
Blockchain Revolution 2018 video

Here are further pictures of numerous events that HPB’s very own Wang Xiaoming has presented HPB…..in the blockchain world he is very respected after releasing multiple whitepapers and publishing several books over the years on blockchain technology. This is a “techie” with a very public profile…..this is not some guy who knows nothing about blockchain looking to scam people with a dodgy website full of lies and exaggerations!

I won’t go into some of the other “dubious” altcoins on the markets who claim to be in bed with companies like IBM, Huwawei, Apple etc, but when you do some digging they have a registered address at a drop-mail and you can only find 3-4 baidu links about the company on the internet, you have to question their trustworthiness

So do I believe in HPB…..very much so :-)

Currently the HPB price sits at $6.00 on www.bibox.com and isn’t really moving. I believe this is due to a number of factors.

Firstly, the entire crypto market has gone bonkers this last week or so, although this apparently happens every January.

Secondly the coin is still on relatively obscure exchanges that most people have never heard of.

Thirdly, because of the current lack of expose, the coin trades at low volume, which means (in my opinion...I can’t actually prove it) that crypto “bots” are effectively controlling the price range as it goes up to around $9.00 and then back down to $6.00, then back up to $9.00, then back down to $6.00 and over and over again.

Finally the testnet proof of concept hasn’t been launched yet. We’ve been told that it’s Q1 this year, so it’s imminent, and as soon as it launches I think the company will get a lot more press coverage.

UPDATE - It has now been officially confirmed that HPB will be listed on Kucoin
The tentative date is February 5th

So, for the investors out there….. It’s trading at $6.00 per coin, and with a circulating supply of 28 million coins, it gives the company an mcap of $168,000,000

So what could the price go to? I have no idea as unfortunately I do not have a crystal ball in my posession….however some are referring to HPB as the EOS of China (only HPB has an actual working, hardware-focussed product as opposed to plans for the future) and EOS currently has an mcap of $8.30 billion dollars…… so for HPB to match that mcap, the price of HPB would have to effectively increase almost 50-fold to $296.4 - Now that’s obviously on the optimistic side, but even still, it shows its potential. :-)

I believe hardware acceleration alongside software optimization is the key to blockchain success moving forward. I guess it’s up to you to decide if you agree or disagree with me.

Whatever you do though…..remember that Most importantly of all…… DYOR!

The Exchange Problem

TL:DR – China is following logic. As such NEO is set up to do well in this market…and if you bought it, this should have been why.
This is an opinion. Do your research. I apologize if some of my facts are not totally exact, but the overall point is an opinion and holds irrespective.
In some countries, China being one of them, capital outflows are controlled so that the currency can be controlled. Control in this case includes inflation/deflation, criminal transactions and laundering money. In this type of environment Bitcoin/crypto is no longer allowed to be a currency, but can maintain its existence as a commodity, like gold or silver. Through this loop it can continue to operate, as long as the commodity is seen and used as a store of value, not as a way to export value, launder money or engage in criminal behavior.
Recent Events (prior bans on Bitcoin excluded as they led to the commodification of crypto and are already documented):
Event 1: Banning of extraction of bitcoin/crypto to USD through Chinese exchanges and the banning of Chinese using foreign exchanges
Clearly this was the PBOCs method of making sure that money didn’t flow through bitcoin and out of the country which would violate the export of value proposition. Essentially you can buy crypto and trade crypto but it can’t (or shouldn’t) be exported out of the country. This being said, it is not foolproof and this less than robust measure probably helped lead to Event 3.
Event 2: The banning of ICOs
While ICOs have value to crypto enthusiasts and fintech innovation, it doesn't take much to understand why they are a dodgy experiment in getting around the regulatory framework it takes to register securities. You aren’t buying a share of a company, but a token which is worth…whatever everyone thinks it is worth. While there are of course great ICOs, there are an equal or higher quantity more that are nothing tokens that don’t really hold value beyond the promise of future tech. Selling something based on a promise of future benefits at its extreme is like selling snake oil and so is a criminal activity as people get preyed upon. (In free markets, this is less of a problem because people getting suckered is their problem. This is not so in this environment) So it is banned until regulated in a way that adheres to either securities law or commodities listing and regulation.
Event 3: The banning of exchanges. Or more likely the banning of the CNY/-insert token here- pair.
While the previous two events tackled the export of value and the prevention of criminal activity, the ability to enter the market with large quantities of fiat, convert it to tokens (many of which are designed for anonymity) and then sell it back out or transfer it to another anonymous entity, is a clear opportunity to launder money. Likewise, it is an easy way of transferring money between two parties without oversight and so also would allow for large scale tax evasion.
So what?
When viewed through the lens of the government, as cryptos grow, they become a clear threat to these three aspects of financial governance. Unsurprisingly this has resulted in actions being taken towards stopping them.
Why now?
Probably because crypto went from an approx 40 billion dollar industry to a 180 billion dollar market cap in the space of a year. That gets people’s attention and also represents the beginning of a structural threat to an economy.
So what next?
There needs to be a resolution to these issues and this (or something like it) is what I see as that resolution.
Event 1: This is a no go and won’t change. The outflow of value is too big a deal and when it isn’t allowed in fiat, it won’t be in crypto. So don’t hold your breath.
Event 2: ICOs represent an innovative way of promoting fintech, this is thus more complicated to control. I would say that having a system where the ICO issuer is vetted, and their ICO is valued independently by a regulatory body will be what happens (akin to a gov’t run market). As such, a quick resolution to this will likely be long in coming and when it is resolved will be highly regulated. It is possible that the big current exchanges will morph into the platform for this. The total banning of new crypto tokens will of course cause innovation to take a hit and so, for a country interested in fintech innovation, maybe that hit is too hard to pass up on ICOs entirely. We shall see. I personally think it isn’t and the ICO age is over in this neck of the woods as blockchain innovation can make you money a great number of ways, and VC funding can cover good ideas without having to turn to investors who are sold on hype and don't understand the technology. ICOs are essentially just a way to skirt accountability and get quick money fast from people who don’t have the resources to vet the company (not hating on crypto, just stating a reality).
Event 3: In order for there to be a way to prevent money laundering (and value export), purchasing into the market will need to be regulated specifically so that a.) Who buys what, when, and how, is known (digital identity) and b.) when that crypto is bought it isn’t washed through an anonymity token and then sold on elsewhere as an invisible transfer (token availability limitations). This will likely mean that any token that wants to be listed on exchanges in markets like China will need to adhere to a digital identity protocol. Given the libertarian nature of much of crypto, and the fact that investors internationally may not like this, few tokens currently will want to do this. This means bad news or difficult decisions for a great many tokens wishing to be listed long term in this type of environment.
Conclusion: This leads to the final conclusion that China will (like it has done with Baidu, Wechat, Renren, and all the rest) begin the development of its own blockchain ecosystem. The only token platform that I can see in the market right now (apart from Civic which isn’t a platform as far as I know) is NEO as it is specifically designed for this scenario. That said, this is early days and NEO only has first mover advantage, so it’s entirely possible that things go another way (govt tokens, Company tokens, existing tokens forking, etc). But such is the way this all works and the risks we take.
We have a rocky couple of months (maybe even year or so – hope not but hey) ahead as this all gets sorted out. But if you are playing the long game and you believe in the tech, and this is your play, then this is a good thing as it gives you time to accumulate. I could be totally wrong but I hope I’m not because a little pain now, is worth a big win in the future.
This is just my two gas on the situation.
