Bitcoin Early Adopters Build Seasteading Home off the ...

State of the Libertarian Movement

I think it is time we provided an update on where we are as a movement.
I will break this down into pieces. Additionally, I will include my own observations and suggestions:
Seasteading
Seasteading is progressing faster than any other direct action undertaken by this movement. Anenome5 has established a company called Ventive Floathouse. This company endeavors to establish the first seastead in Richardson Bay, off the coast of California. It will be a visa haven, appealing to those attempting to bypass America's ornery visa requirements. In the following years after this island has been established, Ventive Floathouse will attempt to build the first seastead in international waters, which will be explicitly anarcho-capitalist. They are currently $450k away from funding the first seastead in Richardson Bay. They are currently testing the design of the island and will not begin accepting funding until testing has been completed. If you or anyone you know would be interested in investing in this project, contact Anenome5 through the website link provided above.
The Seasteading Institute has achieved a Memorandum of Understanding with the French Polynesian government. This Memorandum has been criticized by some within the FP government and the FP public, as seen in this article. Regardless, it appears that the project is moving forward. The plan is to create 12 artificial islands within 1 mile of the FP coastline, funded by investors and an ICO. The project is projected to be completed by 2020, however only time will tell if the Institute will meet that deadline.
In other news, a corporation has officially began marketing artificial islands for the price of 300 million dollars, see here. Their target consumers are the ultra-rich. This suggests that, in the coming decades, seasteading will become an increasingly viable alternative to buying an island.
Suggestions: Support Ventive Floathouse in any way you can. Be the change you want to see. This may be our best shot at establishing an anarcho-capitalist society within the next two decades.
Libertarian Party of the United States of America
In the Presidential Election of 2016, the LPUSA achieved 3.2 percent of the popular vote, a total of 4,042,291 voters. This is a significant improvement over the 2012 election, in which roughly 1 million people voted for the LPUSA. The real challenge will be repeating this success in the next election. Gary Johnson has announced that he will not be running for president in 2020.
The LPUSA has announced its intention to get 2,000 candidates on the ballot for the 2018 elections. Whether or not this will occur remains to be seen.
Despite achieving 3.2 percent of the popular vote, the LPUSA is still struggling to acquire permanent ballot access in all 50 states. The LPUSA currently has ballot access in a majority of states.
In the aftermath of the 2016 National Convention, the LPUSA has been experiencing somewhat of an identity crisis. A fat individual in a speedo danced on stage while the event was broadcast live on CSPAN, significantly tarnishing the reputation of the party. Anarcho-capitalists were widely blamed by moderate libertarians for this incident, despite our outright condemnation of said incident. Libertarians are in the process of deciding whether the party should be radical or moderate in its message and platform. The majority of libertarians wish to see the LPUSA become more moderate, and to abandon such phrases as "Taxation is Theft". There is even a socialist caucus within the Libertarian Party.
In an attempt to preserve the radical libertarian and anarcho-capitalist elements within the LPUSA, the Mises Caucus has been established. Together with the Radical Caucus, these organizations seek to promote radical libertarianism and to elect party officials and political candidates who will represent them.
The Libertarian National Committee is comprised of 8 representatives from 8 regions. Region 1, based in Colorado, is represented by an anarcho-capitalist named Caryn Ann Harlos. I do not know if any of the other committee members are anarcho-capitalists.
in 2014, the former chairman of the Libertarian Party Geoff Neale made history when he was appointed to establish the International Alliance of Libertarian Parties. This is the first attempt by the libertarian parties of the world to coordinate internationally.
Suggestions: Libertarians should seek a moderate platform while maintaining a radical message. Efforts should be made to appeal to a majority of voters while raising the libertarian consciousness of the population to the highest degree possible. Libertarians should focus primarily on running in state and local elections in an attempt to maximize our influence on the American population.
The Free State Project
Thousands of libertarians have moved to New Hampshire in an attempt to influence the politics of the state towards a more libertarian direction. Libertarians have run as republicans and democrats and been successfully elected to office. Statist laws have been repealed and more libertarian laws have been enacted, such as protections for Bitcoin sellers.
Suggestions: Libertarians should move to New Hampshire in greater numbers and run for positions in the local and state governments. Organizations should be established to carry out activism, namely:
And more. Which brings me to my next topic:
Activism
Libertarians, especially outside of NH, have engaged in very little activism. This is due to both a lack of organization and a lack of ideas. Meanwhile, non-libertarians have been engaging in activism that might interest radical libertarians. An example of this are the intermittent property tax protests that have swept across parts of rural America.
Suggestions: Libertarians should seek to emulate the Chicago Tax Strike of 1977. Libertarian organizations should hold town hall meetings about issues that concern the public, such as high property taxes, and attempt to radicalize the public toward direct action, such as a protest or tax strike. Once direct action is underway, libertarians should seek to raise the libertarian consciousness of the disgruntled masses. For example, if people are protesting high property taxes, you can attempt to turn their attention (and anger) to the recipients of those taxes, such as the education system. Instead of being angry about just property taxes, you can make them angry at the public schools who receive it (and waste the money). In this manner, you will raise the libertarian consciousness of the protesters. We must always seek to radicalize and raise the libertarian consciousness of the American people.
Which brings me to a classic example of what we are trying to achieve:
Free Brazil Movement
A few years ago, the Atlas Network and a coalition of charitable organizations provided millions of dollars in funding and a number of activist leaders to think tanks in Brazil. The provision of funding and leaders culminated in the establishment of the Free Brazil Movement, led by Kim Kataguiri. With the support of the Atlas Network and affiliated think tanks, they were able to mobilize many tens of thousands of Brazilian citizens to take to the streets and protest against the socialist government.
The Free Brazil Movement organized the demonstrations of 15 March and 12 April in 2015 against the social governmental establishment of Dilma Rousseff and the Workers' Party, and was instrumental in the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff. See article and video here.
In the aftermath of the uprising, thousands of Brazilians have converted to libertarianism. Some of them are English speakers who frequent this subreddit's Discord Server.
Suggestions: Do everything within your power to support the blossoming libertarian movement in Brazil. Learn Portuguese, translate literature to Portuguese, print flyers and posters in their language, and donate to libertarian institutions in Brazil. Libertarianism is now an international movement, and it is time we acted like one. Emulate their success in raising the libertarian consciousness of the masses, to such a degree that thousands of libertarians were born. And above all, let us work together. Americans and Brazilians, hand in hand!
Students for Liberty
SFL has evolved into a decentralized international organization, with chapters ranging from America to Brazil to Europe and Asia. Gone are the days when SFL was a small organization; it is now a massive organization with thousands of members across the world. SFL represents the spearhead of the libertarian student movement, providing a presence on college campuses and aiding in the recruitment of new libertarians.
Suggestions: We must do everything in our power to build the libertarian student movement. If you are on college campus, it is in your best interest to organize with other libertarians and engage in whatever activism and propaganda dissemination you can. We must build a Student Libertarian Action Movement (SLAM) on every college campus that we can.
Free Society Foundation
Roger Ver and a group of wealthy individuals have raised 100 million dollars in an attempt to purchase sovereignty from a host nation. While the odds of this succeeding are slim, this amounts to the largest holding of capital ever accumulated by a group of anarcho-capitalists. This money could easily be spent on seasteading, activism, advertising, and more.
Suggestions: Let this serve as an example for others to follow. When we pool our money together and raise capital, we can accomplish great things.
Crypto-Anarchism and Crypto-currencies
Bitcoin has come a long way in the last few years. The price has soared and it is beginning to see widespread adoption. It has also given birth to a multitude of new crypto-currencies, such as BCH, Litecoin, Monero, Ethereum, Ripple, etc. Gone are the days when bitcoin was a secret treasure of libertarians. It has now been co-opted by the average joe, for better or worse. Some libertarians argue that this transition, combined with increasing state regulations on crypto-currency, has challenged Bitcoin’s revolutionary nature. But with new currencies like Monero offering the promise of anonymity, many libertarians believe the full revolutionary potential of crypto-currencies has yet to be realized.
The NSA revelations of recent years have resulted in the popularization of crypto-graphic tools, such as Signal, TOR, I2P, etc. Mass surveillance has provoked a widespread counter-surveillance movement.
The Silk Road is long gone, but on the horizon is a new innovation- the Open Bazaar. Decentralized, reputation-based, and incorporating the use of 3rd party arbitration, the combination of software like Open Bazaar with anonymizing tools will facilitate the establishment of an anarcho-capitalist marketplace on the internet.
In the last few years, we have seen the innovation of new ways of engaging in market activities and contractual arrangements, from smart contracts to multi-sig. With these developments destined to advance, the future of crypto-anarchism looks promising.
Suggestions: Spread the word about Open Bazaar and cryptographic tools. Warn others about the NSA in the hopes that it will entice others to begin using such tools. Help to develop the latest in cryptographic tools and protocols so that we may ore effectively establish radical libertarianism on the internet.
Agorism and Crypto-Agorism
Despite a large number of libertarians claiming to be Agorists, very few libertarians abide by the founding document of Agorism, the New Libertarian Manifesto. Most libertarians do not engage in Agorist praxis beyond holding cryptocurrency and retreating to rural homesteads to live in isolation. The strategy of Agorism traditionally requires organization on the part of New Libertarians. Instead, libertarians seem to have adopted a new strategy, referred to as Crypto-Agorism. Crypto-Agorism is a merger of the strategy of Agorism with Crypto-Anarchism. In other words, it is the attempt to realize Agorism on the internet, through the use of tools such as Monero and the Open Bazaar. While Crypto-Agorism blossoms, traditional Agorism appears to be stagnating.
Suggestions: Crypto-Agorism should continue to be pursued. However, libertarians must organize into chapters of the New Libertarian Alliance, participate in counter-economics (beyond the use of cryptographic tools and currencies) and build alternative institutions if we are to truly develop the counter-economy beyond the confines of the internet.
Conclusion
There is more than I could write about, but I will stop there. The next decade will be a turning point for the libertarian movement. Are we prepared to organize, raise capital, build alternative institutions, and ultimately construct a free society? Only time will tell.

"The Big Picture" - Dollar Vigilante November Newsletter

It has been an interesting week for me.
First, I was invited to speak at World Crypto CON in Las Vegas and then shortly before the event they told me I couldn’t speak. At the same time they told most of my other anarchist friends they also couldn’t speak and/or they were banned from the event, including Ben Swann, Luke Rudkowski and Josh Sigurdson of World Alternative Media.
I was already in Texas for the Texas Bitcoin Conference and I mostly just wanted to play in their crypto poker tournament anyway so I went to Vegas.
All manner of strange people seemed to be coming up to me, including one woman speaking in tongues. And, a weird energy surrounded the event... so much so that my body was shaking the entire time.
Then they also didn’t allow me to play in the poker event! I paid one guy some BTC to buy his chips and they threatened to call the police on me! I know what happens next when that happens so I left the premises.
Later that night, Josh Sigurdson was poisoned and barely survived. Other anarchists I knew who were there were being accosted, having their phones stolen and other aggressions.
I should mention this all occurred on Halloween. Day of the dead. Whatever happened, karma struck instantly and no one showed up! I then got a message from my wife that she wanted me to come home immediately and I was happy to do so.
She told me that God told her that we had to tell everyone to repent immediately before it was too late and she went into two days of screaming, crying and became delirious after three days without eating or sleeping.
Eventually we had to get her to the hospital to get her calmed down. I’ve spent the last two days with her there and we just returned home as they gave her a number of things to relax her.
Is something strange going on? It sure feels like it. In any case, as I stated in the last newsletter, no matter what happens I am just going to continue on with my work (although spending more time with my family is also a priority) helping people to wake up... that’s all I can do.
Current Events
As I write it is the midterm selections in the USSA. Yet another, “most important election in our lifetime.” All fear propaganda to try to make believe that voting will fix this evil system of slavery. It won’t. But, when they say this is the "election of our lifetimes" they are right on one thing. Politics, central banks and government are very close to destroying the entire world.
Elect to walk away from it all now before it is too late. I know I don’t have to tell TDVers that but it is worth reiterating.
And, the results are in. Anarchy won like it has every single selection.
And the wars continue killing or destroying the lives of millions of innocents, Americans continue to get extorted for trillions of dollars per year, millions of innocents remain in cages in rape camps and the Federal Reserve continues to impoverish and steal from everyone.
Meanwhile, in things that actually matter, the battle over bitcoin has hastened dramatically. But, you wouldn’t know it from the price action.
The complete lack of volatility has only gotten worse (or better if you are in the “volatility is bad for bitcoin” camp).
Here is a chart of bitcoin on October 27th.
For a 24 hour period it traded within a $15 band! It’s like the whole world is just waiting to see what happens next.
And, what will happen next? I am still expecting a panic sell-off along with all worldwide markets followed by a price explosion.
We did make it through October without that happening, but I have pointed out November is also a prime month for it to occur. If nothing major occurs in November then I may have to reassess.
The US stock markets continue to hang in there but really only propped up by a minority of stocks as this tweet from early October points out.
Bank stocks, which are probably one of the most important to watch are off 17% from January of this year.
Meanwhile, crypto exchange Binance made more profit than Deutsche Bank in the second quarter of this year!
As I said last issue, things really couldn’t be going better for the cryptospace, right as it appears that bank stocks and the market as a whole is on the verge of collapse.
On October 26th, the CEO of Visa, Al Kelly, said that he “certainly” does not view cryptocurrencies as a threat to his business right now, but added that “if we have to go there, we’ll go there.”
You’ll have to go there Kelly... better start working on your resume. Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC is about to release its first blockchain-powered handset in cryptocurrencies, making it the first big name in the industry to accept only digital currencies as payment.
Exodus 1, the first version of HTC’s blockchain phone, is priced at 0.15 BTC or 4.78 ETH, which in current trading equates to about US$960.
HTC first announced the Exodus phone in May, which features a built-in digital wallet that will enable users to store and trade cryptocurrencies.
But, the game changing news is that ICE, the owner of the New York Stock Exchange, has announced they will launch their new digital asset platform, Baakt, on December 12th. This will enable traditional institutional investors to easily invest into the bitcoin market.
The total bitcoin market right now is about a $110 billion market cap.
Total value of financial asset worldwide is estimated to be over $300 trillion. Which means bitcoin is only 0.03% of total financial assets held in the world.
If, say, only 1% of that $300 trillion were to go into bitcoin, that would mean $3 trillion would be trying to enter a market worth $100 billion.
In other words, if you don’t own bitcoin and other cryptos by December 12th... don’t do that. And, don’t forget precious metals either.
FinIst analyst Denis Lisitsyn recently said on RT, “The aggressive US policy in recent years has forced some countries to look for an alternative to the dollar and replenish their gold reserves. Worries about the future growth of global economy are an additional incentive for purchases. Many question Donald Trump’s protectionism.”
Sounds like he has been listening to TDV’s Ed Bugos!
In the same article, Vladimir Rojankovsky, LIFA, expert at the International Financial Center said that Hungary, Poland, Russia, China, India, Turkey and Saudi Arabia are all hoarding gold.
This, after Russian ownership of US Treasury bonds dropped from $96.1 billion in March to an 11-year low of $14.9 billion in May.
The writing is on the wall. And almost the entire public has no idea what is happening.
Luckily you do, so stick with us here as we give you are best guidance on how to survive and prosper during and after the dollar collapse.
And get right with your family and God. I’ve had a few moments in the last week where I thought it might be all over and each time I felt despondent knowing I still haven’t done enough. Don’t wait too long.
Coming Events
Due to my wife being in the hospital recently I cancelled going to Steemfest in Poland. I was also going to go to Iran and Iraq on that trip. But, I’ve decided family has to come before work in this respect.
Which means, really, my next major events are close to home with the TDV Summit on February 12-13th and Anarchapulco/Cryptopulco from February 14-17th.
I couldn’t help notice that World Crypto Con, which seemed to be out to kill all of us anarchists, was on October 31st and Anarchapulco starts on Valentine’s Day. Because it is really all about love.
If you haven’t checked out the TDV Summit page lately, check it out. We’ve added a number of great speakers and I still have a few surprises to announce. It is two full days this year and I am able to focus on it fully for the first time as we have a professional management team running Anarchapulco now. And, included in the price is a gala dinner to be held on the evening of February 12th.
And, Anarchapulco just released its main stage speaker list (there will be 5 stages this year). It’s quite the list! Jeffrey Tucker - Anarchapulco Master of Ceremonies

There are even more announcements soon, including Larken Rose and many more. And, we haven’t announced the Cryptopulco speaker list yet. It should come out in the next week. You won’t want to miss it.
Anarchapulco will likely sell out by January. And all 1,000 rooms in the Princess Hotel are already close to sold out, so if you want to stay on premises, make sure to book your room now. If you miss it, don’t worry, we’ll likely be filling up a hotel nearby down the beach too!
And, don’t worry about what might happen in the future. Live in the present. Own some precious metals and cryptocurrency. Work on yourself, physically, mentally and spiritually. And spend more time with your loved ones.
Everything else will work itself out.
Now, I’m going to go watch Lord of the Rings with my wife and kids. “Hey kids, did you know that ring of power is an allegory for central banks and government?”
Thank you, as always, for being a subscriber!

With a program to build sustainable floating communities with independent governing frameworks, Blue Frontiers has announced a cryptocurrency called Varyon that will power transactions and be required to purchase property on the seasteads.
Blue Frontiers, a company that is developing floating cities (‘Seasteads’), beginning with a pilot project in protected waters, has announced the creation of a cryptocurrency called Varyon. Varyon will be used to power transactions within the economies of their seasteads. Blue Frontiers will transact exclusively in Varyon for the provision of all goods and services related to its Seastead structures and governing systems. These may include purchase of property and consumer goods, the registration and operating costs of businesses operating on the seasteads, and tourist focused accommodation and hospitality services.
Blue Frontiers made significant progress in making its seastead vision a reality with the signing of an historic agreement in early 2017 with the government of French Polynesia to undertake a set of environmental, economic, and legal studies to determine the feasibility of stationing sustainable seasteads in French Polynesian waters. The pilot seastead will be the culmination of more than a decade of research and development in diverse areas including advanced sustainable technologies, political governance frameworks, and floating design and construction. With the support of more than 25 strategic partners, including the Dutch aquatic architecture firm Blue21, the company has prepared a practical plan to build the first seasteads.
“Our team of more than 100 professionals, from a diverse array of disciplines, has worked tirelessly to bring about a revolution in how humans can model habitation, govern themselves, form community, and interact with their environment.” said Randy Hencken, Co-Founder of Blue Frontiers and Director of The Seasteading Institute. “It was only natural that we chose a decentralised currency to power our decentralised communities.”
Designed to be administered under largely autonomous governance frameworks alongside their host nations, seasteads will effectively operate in special economic zones (or ‘SeaZones’). The seasteads will also be mobile and modular, and able to adapt as needed by moving to alternative locations as resident preferences dictate. Communities operating within and parties interacting with the Blue Frontiers ecosystem will use Varyon cryptocurrency as a global medium of exchange.
The Varyon cryptocurrency will underpin Blue Frontiers’ vision for seasteads to have fully self-sufficient, sustainable and flourishing economic systems in place to support their social, political, technological and ecological goals. “Seasteading officially came into the world via The Seasteading Institute in 2008 at almost the exact same time Bitcoin was introduced to the world. Seasteaders and cryptocurrency users are part of a zeitgeist that is calling for decentralization in opposition to overbearing large governments. Seasteaders and crypto-enthusiasts have been fellow travelers for the last decade, and it is natural for Blue Frontiers to adopt a Cryptocurrency for our project. Since we are starting a new society, it wouldn’t make sense for us to use an old world currency.” Said Blue Frontiers “Seavangelesse” (spokeswoman) Nathalie Mezza-Garcia.
“Varyon will provide the vital economic foundation for our mission to build flourishing seastead communities focused on helping to provide a viable adaptation strategy to the threat of rising sea levels, and to demonstrate compelling new models for human social organisation.” said Joe Quirk, Co-Founder of Blue Frontiers and author of the groundbreaking book Seasteading.
The use of Varyon in these floating communities is intended to provide the economic independence needed to foster a conducive environment for thriving experimentation and innovation in a diverse range of leading-edge technologies and across a broad spectrum of social, political, economic and legal frameworks.
The initial seastead project is being organized with the cooperation of the government of French Polynesia while additional projects, in conjunction with other governments around the world, are planned. “We would like to bring the first seastead to a protected atoll or lagoon in my home country of French Polynesia” Said Marc Collins, Co-Founder of Blue Frontiers and former government minister. “This last year we have undertaking a set of serious economic, environmental and legal studies to satisfy our agreement with French Polynesia. Furthermore, we have identified 51 other nations with suitable environments and political opportunities for seasteading, and we have a team actively pursuing additional locations for our seasteads.”

The bastardization of anarcho-capitalism

When the term "anarcho-capitalism" was coined, it was more or less synonymous with Murray Rothbard. Rothbardianism. To say you were an anarcho-capitalist in those first two decades or so more or less meant you were a Rothbardian. Even when the Mises Institute began to grow and take on new names, and publications dedicated more closely to anarcho-capitalism (and not broadly "liberty," objectivism, or libertarianism), basically everyone toed the Rothbardian line.
At the same time, "libertarianism" as a larger movement existed. And it had many, many different forms. In the 60s, there was a substantial libertarian socialist revival that was trying to mix with the new right-libertarians. Rothbard opposed them. There was the counter-culture, also attaching itself to libertarianism, which Rothbard also strongly opposed. And, of course, Ayn Rand and objectivism. In the end, Rothbardian philosophy dominated over those, but split with the Libertarian Party and its more pro-state Cato group. The latter would become far more influential, Rothbard even shifting back toward it and beginning to support its policies.
This is just a brief history of the ideology, to lead up to modern anarcho-capitalism. In its most recent incarnations, less than two decades old, anarcho-capitalism's biggest friend has been the Internet. And the introduction of tech-libertarianism. The idea that technological solutions, rather than political ones, will bring forth anarcho-capitalism. Bitcoin is an example. Seasteading is related to the same trend of new tech hopefulness. And another belief, that of the imminent financial collapse, has strengthened after a few major economic downturns in over the last decade. This idea of the collapse, of a gold standard, etc. was always there. But it has actually strengthened.
All of these things share in common that they don't require any action: anarcho-capitalists are just waiting for anarcho-capitalism to happen by itself.
The old strategy, the Rothbardian anarcho-capitalist strategy, was political. At times, he advocated and allied with people who promoted revolution. To overthrow the state. At times he advocated participation in local politics. He endorsed people for mayor and president. He hit the streets. He campaigned. He organized student groups on campuses. He allied with other anti-state movements on the left and the right. But he was always advocating for a real, tangible, physical, political goal: the end of the state. Even if he changed strategies, his goals were physical, clear, and he believed that he could accomplish them through activism and political means.
Now enters what I see as the bastardization of anarcho-capitalism. This is basically a throwback to certain libertarian trends in the 60s that Rothbard criticized.
In left-anarchism, they have a term called "lifestylism." This is basically the idea that anarchism is a personal philosophy, a lifestyle, that you can be an anarchist day-to-day. That every action is in fact an anarchist action. It doesn't focus on activism, or political results. It's a personal philosophy. It's not really about revolution or workers, or the state.
This is a trend I see a lot of, enough that I would say it may even be dominant, on this sub. I've seen people say that we're already in an anarcho-capitalist society, that every free interaction is actually anarcho-capitalism, that no one should vote, no one should participate in politics. Two threads recently had most people saying no to civil disobedience and no to activism. There is one right now with people saying that they would not even blog about anarcho-capitalism.
A lot of people have said they don't expect a revolution or political change, but are just waiting for the state to collapse or become obsolete. Meanwhile, they're trying to avoid or sidestep the state. Ideological preppers.
Yet others think they can flee from the state in enclaves, seasteads, or spacesteads. This I am sympathetic to, it may be possible in the future. But what it amounts to in practice is people avoiding real political action.
All of this is a part of the "bastardization of anarcho-capitalism." I know there are still a few Rothbardians here. A lot of them are sort of ostracized. A few are the so-called militants. Hoppe gets no love for being "racist," but moreover, I have not seen a single person endorse Hoppe's strategy as outlined in "What Must Be Done." Specifically to take over local governments. The closest thing to Hoppe's strategy is the FSP, which is often ridiculed here because it's too statist. And that's when it is discussed, which is rarely.
So has anarcho-capitalism degenerated to the 60s-style libertarianism Rothbard opposed - the libertarian equivalent of left-anarchist lifestylism- thw idea that libertarianism is not a political movement, anarcho-capitalism is not a political goal, but both are a lifestyle, an ideology, a way to view the world. Anarcho-capitalism is the "personal liberation" version of libertarianism, the belief that it was about how you lived your life freely, that Rothbard mocked? If someone says "vote for Trump" or "go to a protest" it's an unpopular opinion. Nonaction is defended with sophistry. You're an anarcho-capitalist if you have a job and make money, because capitalism.
I often see the left-anarchists and think that Bakunin, or Emma Goldman, or the CNT, would have hated the SJW culture. Instead of worker revolution they are too busy focusing on an obscure sexual preference. Anarcho-capitalists today seem to have the same relationship to the Rothbard of old. Instead of focusing on actual political goals and strategy, be they voting or picking up arms, or protesting, or writing a book, it's this strange ideological circle of people alternating between complaining about the state and then doing nothing at all. Hey, Rothbard complained about the state a lot too. But a lot of what he wrote was about strategy. A lot of the time he spent was in the streets, or really in the universities, trying to forge actual alliances with real people, to put pressure on real politics. He was doing. What happened to that anarcho-capitalism?
I wrote "the bastardization of anarcho-capitalism," but I could have just as easily called it "anarcho-capitalism is dead." At the very least, real Rothbardianism is dead.

The problem of libertarian extremism - freedom as a public good

Let us define freedom as any action that can be made by any individual that will have a result which is valued positively by that individual. Those actions differ among individuals. The positive value we will call profit. Let us assume that a lack of freedom to do that action will not produce such a result and therefore profit is 0. Let us assume that a further lack of freedom either causes the individual to not do something that would stop something bad from happening to him or pushes him to do something that will hurt him. That we will call loss. Let us further assume that this lack of freedom benefits someone else who we can refer to as the coercer by limiting actions that might negatively affect them or by redistributing the benefits of the individuals actions to them. Finally let us assume that the number of coercers is small but the number of individuals is large and the coercer can limit freedoms arbitrarily to arbitrary individuals or groups of individuals.

If we take on all of these assumptions we come to interesting conclusions. The loss of freedom produces a zero sum game among the coercer and individuals. The profit gained by the coercer who can control those individuals is the concentrated benefit received by controlling all individuals but the loss to each individual is dispersed among their large number. Also, the coercer can break individuals into groups and limit specific freedoms while still getting concentrated benefits but for different restrictions. In addition, the profit gained by fighting for an increase in freedom for each individual is much smaller than the loss suffered by fighting the coercer whose concentrated benefits are larger than the losses incurred fighting the individual. In other words, freedom is a public good while coercion is a private good. This so far is the same observation as Mancur Olson has made when observing interest groups in his work on “institutional sclerosis”, Bruce Bueno De Mosquita and Alastair Smith in their work on the selectorate theory, Daron Acemoglu and James A Robinson in their book “Why nations fail”, by public choice theory work of Buchanan and Tulock, Adolph Wagners observations known as the “Wagners law of increased state spending”, Peacock-Wiseman hypothesis and Milton Friedmans observation of why the United States tax system cannot and will not be reformed.

However, things get more interesting. If freedoms comprise different actions for different individuals that means that freedoms are not binary but on a spectrum. More freedom in one area does not automatically mean more freedom in another. In other words, For each individual, fighting the coercer for his particular freedom is a priority, but each individual has different priorities. This means that, not only is freedom a public good, but it is also a dispersed public good. This is the worst public good possible. For public goods that come in a lump sum we have mechanisms of voluntary provision: assurance contracts, dominant assurance contracts, lotteries, bundling etc. We do not have mechanisms for dispersed public goods provision. This has interesting consequences for libertarians.

There are two strategies that libertarians can use: radicalism and gradualism. Radicalism is generally denounced among libertarians because radical changes result in large amounts of pain. Revolutions, after all, are known for the bad effects and the pain they create. Gradualism exists in different forms but they all share one thing, failure. Even in policy shifts towards economic liberalization which happened during the fall of Soviet Union gradualism has failed in countries where it was implemented, grinding to a halt very quickly after the initial implementation. But countries which changed their policies drastically and “over night” saw those changes stick in the long term. This makes perfect sense when observing those changes from the perspective described above. If changes are quick and large they encompass a great number of freedoms that are valued by large numbers of individuals and thus turn a dispersed public good into a lumpy public good. Victory becomes a lump sum game in which one individual does not get wanted freedoms until the others do.

This, however, is unfortunate news for libertarians because precisely the thing that they are trying to avoid, violent change is the only way which results in a change as large as to accumulate enough changes. This means that we can make an unfortunate prediction that if libertarian movement becomes more effective, it will be so because it is more extreme and non extreme parts of the movement unless subsidized by some benevolent billionaire will fade into obscurity as different groups fight and splinter over which freedom is the current priority, failing and finally giving up in frustration.

Example is the experience of the libertarian movement in the United States which is the only libertarian movement of any concentration anywhere in the world and has routinely not only failed but splintered over priorities and disagreements. In contrast the international success of bitcoin has been shocking considering the fact that even though taken for granted today, the history of cryptocurrencies consists of Liberty Reserve whose founder ended up in prison and E-gold whose founder got shut down by United States FBI. Starting it was dangerous and it was clear that the use of it was going to be for violating government regulations in the form of capital control violations, tax evasion etc. Despite this in the early stages it attracted unexpected unanimous unwavering participation by libertarians.

The strength of radical ideas in libertarianism over time might simply be showing an impact of incentives inherent in it. Which puts libertarians who want to avoid extremism between a rock and a hammer.

There have been two mechanisms proposed by libertarians to avoid this problem and they don’t work: separation (modern version being seasteading) and cryptoanarchy. The first idea has been attempted at least two times with the Operation Atlantis and Republic of Minerva. Both were well funded and organized but were ended by Haitian and Tongan gunboats. The second idea is based on putting most of the economic transactions on the internet protected by encryption. Most of the economy is physical ,however, including internet infrastructure and as is clear by observing some authoritarian countries, internet is unregulated mostly by fiat or government inaction rather than by design. This means that it will be unregulated until it becomes a threat as in the case of Silk Road Marketplace or Defense Distributed company. Both approaches delay the conflict rather than avoid it and in the case of cryptoanarchy actually encourage conflict with the government by turning the internet into a larger political threat.

Idea validation

Before wasting time implementing this if nobody is interested I thought I'd lay out the idea in detail here and get feedback rather than my usual process of building something in obscurity and then releasing it to deafening silence like a typical introverted software engineer.
Basic idea
News aggregator like reddit / slashdot / hacker news with microtransactions denominated in a cryptocurrency probably bitcoin or litecoin or both first up in place of karma. The intent should be to keep the "votes" in line with the seriousness that should be due on a well maintained discussion site. That is people should be reluctant to just downvote because something was said that hurt their feelings, but should not be hesitant to upvote because something really insightful was contributed.
Because of the nature of the incentive scheme, there's not really any kind of place on this platform for the "cat pictures" level of content that I can think of, it's more specifically aimed at direct voluntary community action on things that people collectively decide are important.
For stories/self posts default ups in absence of a nominated goal go direct to the submitter's account. Default downs in absence of a nominated goal go direct to the antispam fund for the site. First user specified goal in either case overwrites the defaults.
The funds aggregated on a story go to actually attempting to push forward the agenda of the submitter. Each story has a base goal at least in the upvote direction and people other than the submitter are free to suggest goals for either direction related to the story for a small fee to prevent spam.
The funds aggregated in downvotes are just allocated to different goals in the downvotes group associated with the story.
In the case of multiple goals people should be able to split their contribution by pct with a default matching the index of people who have actually bothered to do so for that vote group.
So, for example to take a few of the current hacker news and reddit stories on my frontpage;
Voyager enters interstellar space
Ups to this would be donated to NASA. Downs go to SpaceX.
I created an app that aggregates lectures from major universities
Defaults appropriate.
58 of the World's Scientific Academies give warning of population overshoot in 1994
Defaults appropriate.
New picture of the possible Nexus successor?
Defaults appropriate.
Joe Rogan and Duncan Trussell Commentate Obama's Syria address - [18:04]
Ups go to a think tank to prevent military adventurism. Downs default.
BuyItForLife Request Ceramic Casserole Dish/Cooker
Ups are split amongst commenters to the story relative to their position on the ladder above a certain threshold. That is to say, this is basically a solicitation for information, you want to incentivise quality responses to the question. Downs are default.
Tallinn players of jazz.. where do you have jam sessions?
As above.
Looking for original art by Selaron- the man the tiled the staircase. Anyone know where I can purchase either in Rio or online?
As above.
Our approach to gender diversity
Ups are directed to an organisation to promote gender diversity in the technology industry. Downs are default
On Crypto and the NSA
Ups go to EFF | tor project | openssl project. Downs default
Spacesteading the anarcho-capitalist movement
Ups go to seastead institute | spacestead institute. Downs default
The Rise Of The Welfare State
Ups go to negative income tax | basic income | voluntary welfare programs. Downs go to Elizabeth Warren's campaign warchest.
For comments ups go directly to the user in question, downs to the antispam bin.
Basically the idea is to make voluntary collective incentives "programmable" by the swarm to promote goals they decide are worthwhile.
Each account is self funded by the users themselves. Site can run ads that when users see them are "cashed" to that user. So just by browsing the site and not funding your account at all, you will still eventually accrue enough credit to participate in the process of actually allocating those funds. As you participate more so you are "sponsored" more by the advertisers by viewing more ads. All users are free to adblock but when they do they don't get credit from the sponsor.
Questions? Opinions? Suggestions?
